OEE for a single machine vs OEE for the entire production line: What are the differences?

I. Calculating OEE for a Single Machine (Illustrative Example)

The OEE of a machine is calculated based on three components:

  • Availability – The percentage of time the machine is available for operation.
  • Performance – The actual operating speed compared to the design speed.
  • Quality – The percentage of products meeting quality standards.

Formula: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

Example: A filling machine in a beverage production line has the following data:

Availability: 95%, Performance: 90% and Quality: 98%.

Therefore: OEE = 95% × 90% × 98% = 83.8%

This index reflects the operational efficiency of the filling machine itself, including downtime, operating speed, and product quality at that stage. If a business wants to identify the cause of a piece of equipment underperforming, the single-machine OEE is a very useful indicator.

II. Why isn’t the OEE of a production line simply the average OEE of the individual machines?

This is one of the common misunderstandings when implementing OEE. For example, a production line has four machines:

Many people assume that the OEE of the production line will be: (92 + 90 + 68 + 95) / 4 = 86.25%. However, this calculation does not accurately reflect production reality. In a production line, the processes are always interconnected. If Machine C operates slower than the others, the entire line will have to wait for this process. The machines ahead may have to slow down or pause because their buffers are full, while the machines behind may lack semi-finished products to continue production.

Therefore, the line OEE is influenced by the capacity-limiting process (bottleneck) rather than the average value of each machine.

III. The Impact of Bottlenecks and Work-in-Process Inventory on Production Line OEE

In most production lines, there is always one or more bottlenecks, which are the stages with the lowest productivity or the most frequent malfunctions. When a bottleneck occurs, the entire line is affected.

If the preceding stage produces faster than the bottleneck, work-in-process inventory will accumulate in the buffer. When the buffer is full, the machines at the beginning of the line are forced to slow down or stop operating even if they themselves are not malfunctioning.

Conversely, the stages after the bottleneck will constantly be in a waiting state for materials, increasing idle time and reducing output.

This shows that the efficiency of the entire line does not depend on the machine with the highest OEE, but on the stage that is limiting production capacity.

Therefore, when evaluating operational efficiency, businesses need to monitor the OEE of each machine and the OEE of the entire line simultaneously to get a complete picture.

IV. When should you measure OEE for a single machine, and when should you measure OEE for a production line?

These two indicators are not interchangeable but complement each other in the production management process.

1. OEE for a single machine should be monitored when:

  • Evaluating the performance of each piece of equipment.
  • Analyzing the causes of machine downtime.
  • Monitoring maintenance effectiveness.
  • Comparing performance between machines of the same type.
  • Identifying equipment that needs priority improvement.

2. OEE for a production line should be monitored when:

  • Evaluating the efficiency of the entire production system.
  • Monitoring actual output against planned output.
  • Detecting bottlenecks in real time.
  • Controlling the balance between processes.
  • Measuring efficiency after Lean, TPM, or Kaizen projects.

Combining both perspectives helps businesses solve problems at each piece of equipment while optimizing the performance of the entire production line.
